NON-FICTION

The Road Less Travelled - Dr. Scott Peck

★ ★ ★ ★

This book was a psychologist which I found very interesting as I recently started therapy. It offers to the reader the perspective of the practitioner and what you can do to help the process as a patient. But mainly, this book is a self-help book through a collection of stories from therapy patients Dr. Scott Peck treated. The first two parts of the book; Discipline & Love, really stuck to me and I found them extremely insightful. They helped me see things from a broader point of view and mainly a different one than my own in some instances. The two last parts: Religion & Grace didn’t resonate with me as much unfortunately. Yet these don’t make me regret picking out this book either. If anything, this book offered me some perspective at a time when I needed it the most.

FICTION

Little Fires Everywhere - Celeste Ng

★ ★ ★ ★ ★

Being very new to enjoying fiction books, I am still navigating what my preferred genre is. I am not sure this one was 100% spot on for me, yet I had never read something like it before that I enjoyed so much. Or maybe only “The Girl On The Train” yet, the atmosphere in “Little Fires Everywhere” is much more colourful and lively in my opinion, which I like a lot. The contrast between the two main characters and their lifestyles really creates an interesting dynamic. There are quite a few characters in the book and usually I have a hard time really getting a grasp at all of their personalities. In this book, all the characters are so well presented and introduced. We get to find out more about their past as the story moves forward and it adds a lot of depth to all of them. It’s also very easy to picture who they are and relate to each one of them, without ever getting lost about who is who. The author does such a great job at raising awareness on important topics such as privilege and racism, it’s very interesting and offers different point of views. Overall I think it’s just an enjoyable book to read, it never gets boring and is written beautifully and with a lot of depth.
